As complex as making money on the web can seem, there are really only two ways to do it: sell a product or make money on residuals. Selling is fun and fast. You make something, whether it is a shoe or a treatise on 18th century animal husbandry practices, then you sell it to someone, getting a lump of cash in your proverbial pocket. But as enjoyable as a jolt of dough might be, there is a better way.

It is slow. It is subtle. But, if you give it time, it will make you far more, far more consistently, than selling your content.

I'm talking, of course, about residual income.

What are Residuals?

You write an article and publish it to a site with advertising on it. Web browsers visit the site, read the content, then click the ad. Every time a user clicks the ad, you get a bit of money. If your content is compelling, then the pennies from each ad click ad up to some serious money.

Those pennies you earn are called residuals. They aren't tied to when the article was written; it can be years after the piece was published, but as long as some method for profiting from it is in place, you still make money.

This is the beauty of residual income. It keeps earning without you doing anything after the initial effort. You can keep making money for years, often making manyfold as much as you ever would have with the article had you just sold it outright.

But ads aren't the only way to make residual income. There are better ways, if you know a lot about your niche.

Residuals and Membership Sites

If your content is truly compelling, people will be willing to pay for it. And while you could recoup some of your costs with advertising, you will never make lots of money off of it, unless your site happens to be enormously popular.

Rather, most niches are better suited to membership sites. Think of a membership site like a niche Wikipedia, with everything you want to know about a specific subject, created by you. And, in order for people to become members, they need to pay a monthly fee.

And this is where it gets interesting. If your content is truly compelling, then people will generally stick around month after month, paying the fees to access your site. You will find that you quickly build up a whole flock of paying customers, each recommending you to their friends. And as long as you keep producing killer content, they won't leave.

If you think a membership site might be for you, consider hiring an expert. Rapid Residual Pro makes the management of membership sites dead simple, and covers many topics you might not have even thought of.
