Shoes come in so many shapes, styles and colors that there's a pair to match every personality and every height. Sometimes, trial and error gives you the surest sign that a particular shoe really isn't the best for your physical attributes. However, knowing some of the basic rules of matching shoes to your body type will help limit the search for the right pair. You can find the newest styles at online stores like The Walking Company and 6pm.com. Here are some tips to get you started picking flattering styles for your height:

Short and Sexy

The key to any fashion decision for a short lady--typically 5-foot-4 and shorter--is what will give you a taller and leaner silhouette. Of course, petite ladies can make their legs appear slimmer and longer by wearing a pair of 2.5-inch to 4-inch heels, especially if the toe box is more pointed than round or square. However, if you have thick legs, avoid the strappy styles for something a bit more substantial, like a classic pair of Mary Janes or pumps. If you want to show a little skin, an open toe is sexy at any height.

Boots are another option, but stick to mid-rise or knee-high styles to avoid making your legs look even shorter. Although ankle boots are cute, they will make you legs appear larger, and boots above the knee will only make you look shorter. Also, keep in mind that seemingly obvious choices, like chunky heels and flats, will only make your legs look heavier and much shorter. Toss the chunky heels and save the flats for shorts or skirts hemmed above the knee. A good rule of thumb for color is to choose boots that match your tights, pants or skirt.

Long and Lean

Taller women can wear just about every style beautifully, especially boots that fall at the knee or higher. Nonetheless, taller women should avoid heels that are extremely tall so that they don't tower over everyone in the room. Instead, opt for heels that are 2 inches or shorter. That will give you a lean, feminine look without appearing like a giant. Tall women get the most benefit from flats, too, which look fantastic with jeans, skirts and dresses. As for appropriate shapes, choose a pair of shoes with a more rounded or boxed toe. Pointy shoes will make you feet seem longer.

Materials Matter

The color and embellishments on the shoes you buy will make a real difference when it comes to working with your individual body shape. Shorter women will get more length out of metallic or brighter colors, while taller ladies may want to stick with neutrals or more muted colors to make their feet appear shorter or smaller. Yet another thing to consider is how the shoe is decorated. These are especially helpful for taller women, because the addition of buckles, bows and buttons can visually shrink larger feet.
